Durst Group: digital print natives

Durst has entered into a strategic partnership with South African company Midcomp to accelerate the expansion of digital printing solutions in the region. The collaboration is built on a long-standing relationship and shared values such as technical excellence, customer focus, and sustainability.

“It started with a call that I wasn’t expecting,” says Rob Makinson, CEO of Midcomp. “An invitation to visit Durst’s headquarters in Brixen quickly turned into strategic alignment. One thing led to another – and now we’re Durst’s official South African partner. It’s a big deal for us.”

By integrating seasoned experts from the industrial inkjet sector and investing in training and service infrastructure, Midcomp is further strengthening its capabilities in high-end digital printing – with a clear focus on labels, packaging, textile and large-format solutions. The company is also expanding its footprint in Cape Town and preparing to enter neighboring markets such as Namibia and Botswana. “Midcomp’s support network gives us the confidence to grow into neighbouring markets,” says Markus Gleissner, Managing Director EEMEA Graphics at Durst.

Durst contributes with cutting-edge technologies such as the new P5 series, water-based ink solutions and fully automated workflows. “The P5X flatbed is a standout,” Markus notes. “It’s robust, cost-effective and ideal for small-volume sign makers and commercial printers.” The goal: to empower South African print providers as they scale toward full industrial digital production.

Sustainability also plays a central role in the partnership. “We were pushing water-based and UV inks long before it was fashionable,” Markus adds. “Sustainability isn’t a marketing tool for us – it’s a core engineering principle.”
