In 1998 Ursula Hage and her husband started their own business. Having advanced from a small two-man business to an internationally operating packaging manufacturer, Verpackungsberatung Hage GmbH & CO.KG now has almost 30 employees and an annual turnover of over €5 million. In 2011 the company began to switch to digital production and invested in plotter technology and later also in digital flatbed printers. The company supplies to a wide range of industries: furniture industry, medical and laboratory technology, tool technology, automotive industry and the food industry. The digital production facility that belongs to the company (Albfactory) specializes in packaging and displays made of cardboard and corrugated board.
"Many years ago, we were aware that digitalisation brings with it a change of times and so we had the vision of an online shop for corrugated board packaging already in 2016. Thanks to our plotter technology, we already had access to a software on which Durst had an online shop based. So with the help of Durst our online shop quickly became a hit."
In 2019, Mrs. Hage and her husband decided to further upgrade and modernize the online shop with the new Durst Smart Shop solution to offer their customers even more flexibility and creativity in product design. The Boxitut, the new online shop, went live in March 2020.
Ursula Hage explains: "The entire menu and navigation of the Boxitut is new, you can get to the product and the order menu faster from all points. The online shop is even more user-friendly, the entire graphics have been improved and users get more inspiration through product suggestions. This makes the customer approach much more direct and thanks to Durst's enhanced Smart Editor, the whole process is much smoother and faster."
"In addition, customers are excited about the fact that the punch contours can be downloaded to create complete designs via the marketing department or with their own software and upload the file again during the ordering process. Furthermore, the 3D preview is an important, improved feature, which is especially crucial for the approval of the product. Another new feature is that we can define millimetre sizes during the packaging design process."
The order data is transmitted online to the production department and processed there in a purely digital form. The well-equipped production facility, which also includes a Durst Delta 250 WT Multi-Pass UV printer using odorless ink, which is highly suited for a range of corrugated packaging, guarantees customers short delivery times and lean cost structures.
"Thanks to the upgraded online shop, we will definitely tap into new markets. More and more companies, especially young start-ups, are looking to do business over the Internet, and that’s currently increasing due to Corona and minimized contact. Our digital production has given us a great advantage," says Ms. Hage. It all began in 1954 with a small printing shop for business stationery, before Etiquetas Macho specialized in label printing. Eye Spy Signs started out in a suburban home garage in Hobart (Tasmania – Australia) back in 1994 eking out an existence as a dedicated Real Estate sign provider. In 1996 the Company bought the Government’s Main Roads sign workshop at tender and all of a sudden became heavily involved in road sign manufacture for the State of Tasmania.
For the next 20 years, our road signs were made using conventional methods – screen printing or cut vinyl – both high in labour content and inherently inefficient. In the meantime, the development of digital printing processes – and in particular ink technology (in conjunction with 3M) was progressing at a quick pace.
In March 2017, Eye Spy took delivery of a Durst Rho 163 TS and all of a sudden, another world opened up. It quickly re-affirmed our position as industry leader. As well as conventional roll-to-roll printing, it offered many side benefits including the ability to print flat substrates. For example, we very frequently print jobs direct to corflute requiring no over laminate. These days we put many different types of substrates through the machine – it is so versatile.
Year on year, our turnover has increased whilst our labour levels have decreased.
Running costs are surprisingly low and the reliability of the machine is nothing short of incredible - we have experienced machine availability exceeding 99% since it was commissioned. When needed, support from Durst has been outstanding and the fact that we are in different hemispheres/time zones has made little difference.

Rondo’s digital transformation for its corrugated packaging business has been driven by brands who have opened their minds to the new wave of opportunities from sustainable production where flexibility and time to market are crucial driving factors.
Digital corrugated production is now going up by 25-30% a year for Austria-based Rondo St Ruprecht an der Raab, one of six plants in Europe for the family-owned Rondo Ganahl Group. The company specializes in corrugated board production using flexo, offset and digital technologies. It has never looked back since making a leap of faith two years ago and becoming one of the world’s first users of the Durst SPC 130 water-based technology.
Managing all data through the Durst workflow with its sophisticated color management, analytical tools and variable data creation, has made a strong and positive difference – all provided through Durst Professional Services.
Robert Posch, Operations Manager at Rondo St Ruprecht an der Raab, said: “We didn’t just buy a machine, we bought a whole system involving software, analytical tools and., calculation tools, so we are very happy that we don’t need any additional software. The brand Lindt & Sprüngli, as an example, has extremely dark and powerful red colours, as well as brown. Karl Pucher has been the Managing Director at for Rondo St Ruprecht an der Raab for the last eight years. “We had been talking about getting into digital printing for a long time and for Rondo it was something new,” he said. “We had to change a lot of processes and took a lot of risk. We have made a lot of improvements in the processes. Sales are now racing ahead every month. Customers are making repeat orders, which is very important, so we are very happy that we took this decision. Our corrugated business is going up by around 20 to 30% every year and we see that this is a fast-growing business for the next years and soon we plan to go for a full three-shift operation. The share of digital printing was at first around 5 to 10% of our overall business, but we expect this to double within the next couple of years.
“It’s a known fact that brand owners were in love with the offset printing because of the quality, but since we have had digital printing we have transferred lot of offset business to digital because of shorter lead times, initiation costs and there is no difference in quality between offset and digital for many applications. Quality is extremely important for the brand owners, but it is not the topic anymore.
About 90% of the Rondo digital printing business is for the food industry. Brand owners have many more products compared to a few years ago and shorter lead times to market. “Lindt & Sprüngli is one example where we used to plan months ahead for Christmas, Easter and summer editions and needed to keep high levels of stock,” said Mr Pucher. “Now with digital technology we can be extremely flexible. Lindt & Sprüngli can create a new order that we can produce digitally and have in the shops within weeks.”
Mr Pucher added: “Digital printing is also providing answers for the global debate on the use of plastic packaging, which obviously extends to food and safety. Using the new food safety compliant inks in primary and secondary packaging means we can create corrugated board packaging to be used as an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. The SPC 130 with its water-based technology from Durst is providing the solutions that we need to delivery to the food industry.”

La galardonada empresa The Label Makers se expande a mercados superiores y ha convertido una importante empresa alimentaria, que para ellos solo era un potencial objetivo, en uno de sus mayores clientes, gracias a la plataforma Tau RSC de Durst y las capacidades de software que ofrece.
“La calidad fotográfica es absolutamente increíble” afirmó David Webster, director general de la empresa conocida como Labmak. “La calidad de impresión nos ha permitido captar trabajos más sofisticados, sobre todo porque nos ha sido mucho más sencillo alcanzar con el color de marca de todos los clientes. Uno de los galardones fue concedido por los premios UK Packaging a la “Etiqueta del Año” y el otro, por los Digital Printer Awards a los “Efectos Especiales en Etiquetas y Packaging”. “La profundidad y la vivacidad de las tintas impresas con la Tau 330 RSC de Durst fueron cruciales, nunca podríamos haber ganado sin ellas” afirma rotundo el Sr. Webster. “¿Quién se habría imaginado que un día estaríamos imprimiendo digitalmente etiquetas para ron? ¡Qué más puedo decir!”
“Actualmente los requisitos de los clientes están en constante cambio. En este mercado, la fechas de entrega de las etiquetas no cambian cada día, sino que lo hacen cada hora, por lo que tenemos que contar con la flexibilidad suficiente para imprimir en cualquiera de las máquinas, e incluso transferir trabajos desde la flexografía. El software Durst Workflow Label nos permite manipular archivos a pie de máquina, por lo que los trabajos se pueden optimizar inmediatamente por los operarios de la impresora, sin tener que devolver el archivo al estudio, lo que fácilmente podría suponer unos 20 minutos. La empresa familiar Labmak fue fundada en 1963. Comenzó como empresa tipográfica, evolucionaron hacia la flexografía y la litografía, y ahora usan cada vez más el digital. Labmak instaló la plataforma RSC en fase beta hace tres años, trabajando en asociación y de forma muy activa con Durst. Actualmente, ya cuentan con dos impresoras de inyección de tinta UV single-pass, Tau 330 RSC de Durst, con una capacidad de producción industrial de hasta 80 metros lineales/min.

After years of market research, Michelangelo decided to invest in a Durst P5 350. The options for roll to roll and direct board printing, the variety of substrates that can be printed on and the sustainability of the inks played a decisive role. In addition, Durst's Web-to-Print solution Smart Shop offers Michelangelo the opportunity to become a global player.

The innovative company Werbescheibe.de, based in Dortmund, has been supplying vehicle advertising systems and large-format digital prints for small and medium-sized companies, such as driving schools, craftsmen, delivery services, insurance companies and dental practices for over 15 years. Matthias Banike, founder of Werbescheibe.de, had worked with a self-developed webshop for a long time before opting for Smart Editor software in 2015.
For Mr. Banike, the flexibility and easy handling compared to other solutions was the decisive factor: "The Smart Editor convinced us from the beginning, because it is individually configurable and extremely flexible. In addition, print products with very different shapes and formats can be set up. The choice of tools for the design is very large and can be set up according to customer group and needs.“
In order to make the exchange of data even smoother and thus give customers even more freedom in product design and ordering, Mr Banike decided to invest in Durst's complete Smart Shop solution in 2019.
"It was important to us that we could configure the shop ourselves," says Mr. Banike. "We have many different tools that we can offer customers, but not every function makes sense for all products. For example, we offer different layout templates for specific customer groups, where just the color and text can be changed in a very user-friendly way. The design process, especially for simpler products such as magnetic foils, is therefore extremely uncomplicated and fast. If customers do not want to use the templates, they can also design their own, as the solution offers great flexibility.
Whether vehicle advertising, advertising panels, floor films, wall films, window films, perforated films, PVC films, banners, posters or beach flags - all print media can be designed directly online, checked in the 3D preview and then ordered. Simply place a logo or image on the drawing surface, enter the appropriate text and the print products are delivered directly to your home or company.
"Many customers are particularly enthusiastic about the 'product preview in the application',” explains Mr Banike. "For example, roll-up products can be placed in a virtual room so customers can see exactly what the product will look like in a salesroom. This gives customers a much better idea of how certain products will look in a natural environment.” Many customers also like the fact that the customer templates are saved and can be retrieved later.
The digitally created print products are designed in such a way that all films and advertising systems can be assembled by the customer himself with the help of assembly instructions. It is also possible to download print templates and create complete designs via the marketing department or a graphic designer and upload the file in the order process.
"Despite our wide range of products and the provision of layout templates, we were able to complete the basic setup of the shop within a few weeks,” said Mr Banike. "The setup was easy and didn’t require much previous knowledge, as the functions in the back-end of the Smart Shop solution, such as the Page Builder plugin, contribute to an easy website design. Durst has proven to be a professional partner every step of the way. The investment has had a very positive impact on our business and we’ve gained many new customers."

Bliss Impex, an international manufacturer of synthetic textiles printed fabrics and apparel fabrics, exports 80% of its business and counts many globally-recognised brands among its clients. In a price-sensitive market, the company now relies heavily on Durst proven technology for industrial-scale production. Less wastage, fast-turnaround on orders, no limitations on colour, broad designing concepts and printing on virtually any materials and 50% less water consumption are among major benefits in a seismic change to digital production of over 10,000,000 linear meters a month.
“This is the future,” said Ekansh Jain, Director of Bliss Impex. “Durst’s proven and cost-effective solution in a price-sensitive market is revolutionising our business. The machines are incredible flexible with no limitations on colour. We can print on an endless list of materials with the Alphas, including many that used to need pre-coating. The fantastic quality gives us a competitive edge, and the sharpness and brightness really stand out.”
Bliss Impex is part of the Jain Group of companies employing 300 people and having a €17.5 million turnover. In a changing market, buyers and designers are now demanding shorter turnaround times from order to delivery and an immediate response when any last-minute changes are needed.
Ekansh Jain typifies the new mindset within the family-owned firm in an evolving market where brand owners and designers demand digital production. Bliss Impex made the investment in Durst systems – three Alpha 190s Reactive production systems and one Durst Alpha 180 printer for polyester work – after a first venture into digital didn’t work out with another supplier. They use the Durst One-Step GOTS-certified reactive ink. All the printers are housed in a temperature-controlled new digital centre in Delhi in a €6million investment. Orders can be completed within three days, sometimes even 24 hours, a far cry from the 15 days it would take with conventional production.
Durst provides round-the-clock on-site technical support as well as a remote link-up with the Durst headquarters in Italy. “We have had a real partnership approach with Durst, which provides world-class support and service,” said Mr Jain. “It may be in as little as three years’ time that our unit here runs completely on digital. Costs are coming down all the time. This is a redefinition of the production processes.
“A lot of international brands and and buyers are now asking for digital printing because they see this seen as a green process. We have reduced our water consumption by 50%, around 500,000 liters per month. As one example of how we are growing our business and opening new opportunities directly with brand owners, H&M needed to print on sushi voil for a ladies’ garment and we completed the 300,000 linear meter order within 20 days. It could not have been done conventionally in that timescale because we needed many different colours and lots of merging. The incredible quality speaks for itself.”
Mr Jain concludes: “This is a seismic change in the industry as people are being educated to the benefits of digital.”

Self-made entrepreneur Prithviraji Kankariya has committed to a digital textile printing future because, he says, it is the only way forward for the industry globally.
“If you want to grow, it has to be digital. This is the future – no question,” said Mr Kankariya, a respected figure in textiles for more than 25 years who is the founder of Kankariya Textile Industries and Anupam Creation in Ahmedabad, India. “Currently our business is roughly 70% traditional production and 30% digital, but will be evenly split within two years, and I am confident it will be completely digital within five years.”
Creativity and innovation are the backbone of the success at Anupam Creation. Focusing on home textiles – everything including bedsheets, curtains, tapestry, curtains and cushions – and fashion clothing, the teams specialise in creating their high end ‘own recipe’ designs for traditional, hybrid and digital production.
Now he is focusing on a complete transformation to digital textile printing. “In India, it will take a little bit of time but in many countries it has already changed,” said Mr Kankariya. “The whole market for rotary and flatbed will be finished in 10 years.”
Anupam Creation was formed two years in a $5million (€4.5m) investment in a modern building and equipment. Durst is one of three manufacturers supplying digital equipment for the company. In Mr Kankariya’s own words, the Alpha 330 production printer with SuperMultipassTM “defines a new generation of digital printing, creating a new performance class through the integration of new technologies in the printheads, inks, drying units and the interaction with the software”.
“It’s not just the build quality, reliability and extremely high speed of the machine; another good plus for Durst is the sensors in the software that are very well aligned to work at those industrial speeds. If there’s ever a problem, which is rare, we know straight away so avoid waste and having to re-do jobs, which can be expensive. Having fast design uploads is very productive, so are the detailed analytics.

Major benefits include minimal water wastage, no limitations on colors or need for color separation, no large amounts of stock in warehouses, any number of individually printed samples immediately available, and production for small or large orders – unlike traditional printing where the minimum fabric quantity order would start from 10,000 meters.
Mr Kankariya concluded: “With printhead and ink prices continuing to come down, I know will have changed all my business to digital after five years, which I am sure will enable our business to continue to grow. Durst has very good technology and I am very happy with the Durst machine. Let’s see what happens…”
