Durst Habitat: Good Design Award for a Good Product
"They say the prophet counts for nothing in his own country, so we are all the more pleased to have received recognition with the 2021 Good Design Award* for our Durst Habitat air disinfection system," says Christoph Gamper, CEO & co-owner of Durst Group.
At the beginning of the first COVID wave in 2020, amid uncertainty and lockdowns, developers at Durst put their heads together to find a solution on their part to reduce the risk of infection in indoor environments. Experience with UV technologies as a drying unit in printing systems quickly led them to UV-C rays, which have been used for decades in wastewater treatment plants to sterilize water. After internal testing, proof was available that disinfecting indoor air with UV-C rays would also work, so the developers went into the details with flow simulations, air volume calculations, UV-C lamp testing, and developing the planned air disinfection system. The first Durst Habitat was built and sent to independent and certified laboratories to measure its functionality and efficiency within three months. The result: >99% efficiency in a room up to 100m2. The perfect solution for waiting rooms, lobbies, restaurants, bars, and meeting rooms with no high-efficiency air conditioning with Hepa filters. Durst crowned the Habitat with its customizable and changeable membrane surface, turning the air disinfection system into an advertising and information surface in addition to its protective function.
Durst presented the Habitat to the Employers’ Association of the Province of Bolzano and the regional government to equip schools in the region with this additional protective measure in a joint community project. Also, many retail, hospitality, and lodging businesses were interested in the Durst Habitat to complete the protective measures for their guests. However, state regulations at the time alternated almost daily between mandatory masks and Plexiglas screens, and in the end, it resulted in renewed lockdowns. There was no planning certainty for entrepreneurs to keep their businesses open. Durst conducted independent sponsorships for schools and kindergartens to reduce the risk of infection here as much as possible. In late 2021, an ice hockey club contacted Durst, reporting that after a player session lasting several hours in the locker room where a Durst Habitat had been installed, one player tested positive that evening. No other participant had been infected. Durst does not proclaim whether it was only due to the Durst Habitat because, from the beginning, Durst Habitat was communicated as a complementary protective measure. But history shows, if you invest in maximum safety, you also get complete protection.
Durst is currently offering the Durst Habitat at special rates as part of a winter special. For more information, contact us by email at protection(at)durst-group.com.
